A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

You could classify me as an immunologist, a doctor, a CEO, but one of my favorite titles is keyboardist for SITC’s house band, The CheckPoints. The band is comprised of thirteen cancer immunotherapy scientists who, in addition to sharing a love of science, have a passion for music. If you haven’t seen The CheckPoints perform yet, I’m happy to let you know you have two upcoming opportunities. The first is next month on Sunday, June 5.  We will be returning to Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago! The second opportunity is at the 37th Annual Meeting & Pre-Conference Programs in Boston, MA where the band will play at The CheckPoints Party on Nov. 11.  All proceeds benefit SITC’s Forward Fund which provides much needed funding for our early career scientists. Speaking of the Annual Meeting, registration is officially open! We hope you’ll consider joining us in Boston as we bring together the immunotherapy community for another exceptional meeting.

This month’s Fireside Chat guest is no stranger to Boston and is a fellow immunologist/ CEO, Dr. Laurie Glimcher. Dr. Glimcher is currently the President and CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute just outside the heart of the city. It was a pleasure to speak with Dr. Glimcher who has achieved so much throughout her career. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine and, notably, she was the first female to be appointed as dean of Weill Cornell Medicine in New York as well as the first female appointed to her current role.

Our discussion features a number of topics, including the joy of training and mentorship, how taking risks can pay off, balancing a career in science with family life and much more. I hope you all enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Thanks again to Dr. Glimcher for joining for this month’s Fireside Chat.

Sincerely,

Patrick Hwu, MD
SITC President
