A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

Somehow, the 37th Annual Meeting & Pre-Conference Programs (SITC 2022) has already come and gone. I would like to start this message with a sincere thank you to all of the attendees, supporters, organizers, faculty, staff and other volunteers who helped make our society’s meeting a record breaking success. More than 7,400 professionals in the cancer research community gathered in Boston and virtually Nov. 8–12 to present and hear the latest data and research from more than 1,500 abstracts SITC received.

We heard an amazing Keynote Address from Padmanee Sharma, MD, PhD on the future of neoadjuvant immunotherapy, honored many of the SITC award winners and inducted the second class of the Fellows of the Academy of Immuno-Oncology (FAIO). Additionally, we saw many new activities including new Early Career Scientist events as well as a mentorship and networking program for underrepresented minority undergraduates in STEM. Don’t forget, for all those who registered for SITC 2022, you can access program presentations on-demand through Jan. 9, 2023 on the SITC 2022 virtual platform.

Dr. Crystal Mackall of Stanford University, was also in attendance at SITC 2022. She sat on a panel – along with Dr. Carl June, Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg and Dr. Michel Sadelain – that honored the work of Dr. Zelig Eshhar, as well as co-chaired a session on immunotherapy in special patient populations. However, before I saw Dr. Mackall in person at the meeting, we sat down virtually for this month’s Fireside Chat. We explore her background and dive into her stellar work with identifying an essential role for the thymus in human T cell regeneration and more. Click the video below to listen to our full conversation.

Thanks for tuning in. For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope it was enjoyable! Check back next month for my last Fireside Chat as SITC president.
Sincerely,
Patrick Hwu, MD
SITC President
