Program Summary
Tasuku Honjo, MD, PhD, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, was the 2015 Smalley Keynote presenter at the SITC 30th Anniversary Annual Meeting on Friday, November 6, 2015 in National Harbor, MD. Instrumental in the discovery of PD-1 and its role in regulating T cell response, Professor Honjo is a major leader in the immunotherapy field. His work has helped define the immunologic role of PD-1 in diseases and also helped identify PD-1 as a target for cancer immunotherapy drug development. Professor Honjo's research has also included major contributions to our understanding of immunoglobulin class switching. In 1978, he developed a model of how antibody gene rearrangement during class switching occurred and went on to verify the model by elucidating the DNA structure. He also discovered the molecular structures and functions of IL-4 and IL-5, cytokines involved in class switching. More recently, Professor Honjo identified activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) as playing an important role in class switching recombination and somatic hypermutation. About the Richard V. Smalley, MD Memorial Award: Established in 2005, the Richard V. Smalley, MD Memorial Award is presented each year to a luminary in the field that has significantly contributed to the advancement of cancer immunotherapy research. This award serves to honor those that have been pioneers in their work and made a notable impact worthy of high regard and recognition by their peers. Named in memory of former Society President and SITC charter member, Richard V. Smalley, MD, this is the Society's most prestigious award.

About the SITC 30th Anniversary Annual Meeting
SITC's 30th Anniversary Annual Meeting provided a multidisciplinary educational and interactive environment focused on improving the outcome for current and future patients with cancer by incorporating strategies based on basic and applied cancer immunotherapy research. The meeting consisted of cutting-edge research presentations by experts in the field, oral and poster abstract presentations and ample opportunity for both structured and informal discussions including important networking opportunities. In addition, the meeting included updates on major national and international initiatives coming from academia, government and industry, as well as ongoing SITC projects.

Intended Audience
The target audience for this program included basic and clinical investigators from academic institutions, industry and regulatory agencies, including clinicians, researchers, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and allied health professionals involved in cancer research as well as pharmacists and payers that wished to learn more about cancer immunology and immunotherapy and its incorporation into current (and future) effective cancer treatment.
