The "Cancer as a Disease of the Metaorganism" presentation recognizes that human cells act as sensors for environmental changes. Aging can induce modulation of immune cell properties from resultant physiological or damaged-induced changes in the somatic environment. Exposure to high chronic doses to antigen can lead to adaptive lymphocyte changes rendering them refractory to further stimulation. But these cells, actually, should not be considered exhausted as they can modify their immediate environmental resources. Intervening to prevent or revert these adapted cells is what has led, in effect, to development of new cancer immunotherapy strategies.
