For decades, federal research funding has been awarded through a rigorous peer review process that relies on independent scientific experts to evaluate proposals based on scientific merit, innovation, feasibility, and potential patient impact. This merit-based system has helped establish the United States as the global leader in biomedical research and has contributed to countless advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

SITC is concerned that the proposed rule could increase the role of political review and discretionary decision-making in federal funding determinations while diminishing the role of independent scientific peer review. In its comments to OMB, SITC urged the Administration to preserve the central role of independent scientific peer review in federal funding decisions and maintain safeguards that ensure research awards are evaluated based on scientific merit and potential patient benefit.

Now, SITC is calling on our members to make their voices heard. Congress has an important oversight role in protecting the integrity of the nation's biomedical research enterprise and ensuring that federal research funding continues to be guided by scientific excellence and evidence-based decision-making.

Take action today by contacting your Members of Congress through the SITC Advocacy Toolkit and inform them of these new regulations and encourage them to preserve independent scientific peer review and protect the future of cancer research.
