A Message from the President
One of the most exciting aspects of our field is seeing how advances in cancer immunotherapy continue to translate into new possibilities for patients. Recent preliminary results with a personalized cancer vaccine for melanoma are particularly exciting, demonstrating the potential of tailoring an immune response to the unique targets in an individual patient’s tumor. While further follow-up and validation will be important, these findings offer another reminder of the remarkable potential of immunotherapy and of how rational immunotherapy combinations can be better than monotherapy.
One of the greatest strengths of SITC is the community we have built together. While our Annual Meeting and educational programs bring our field together on a large scale, some of the most meaningful connections happen in smaller groups centered around shared scientific interests, professional experiences and emerging areas of immuno-oncology.
SITC Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are one of the many benefits of SITC membership and provide a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues who share your interests. SIG participation is exclusive to SITC members, and SIGs bring together members around a specific topic, research area, therapeutic approach, geography or other area of cancer immunotherapy. They provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss emerging research, identify opportunities for collaboration and build relationships with colleagues across the field.
We’re already seeing how SIGs can help fill a need within our community. Recently, a member looking to connect with colleagues working in sarcoma reached out to learn more about opportunities to build a sarcoma-focused community within SITC. While there is not currently a dedicated sarcoma group, a SIG could provide a natural way for members with shared interests to find one another, exchange ideas and build connections. This is exactly what makes SIGs so valuable: they are member-driven. They are an opportunity for you to help shape the conversations and communities within SITC around the topics that matter most to you and your work.
If you see an opportunity for a new SIG, I encourage you to bring the idea forward. Before proposing a new group, please review the SIG requirements and proposal process outlined on the SITC website to ensure your idea meets the criteria and that you understand what is expected of SIG leaders and participants. Once you have reviewed the requirements and gathered the necessary information, you can submit your proposal for consideration.
As our field continues to evolve, so too should the communities that support it. The ideas and interests of our members are what make SITC a dynamic, member-driven organization, and I look forward to seeing the new collaborations and conversations that emerge from these groups.
