A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

The 36th Annual Meeting & Pre-Conference Programs (SITC 2021) is in the rearview mirror and it was such a huge success. There was a record number of abstract submissions, an amazing Richard V. Smalley Memorial Lecture from Crystal Mackall, MD on CAR T Cells for Solid Tumors, as well as a recap of Project Lightspeed with Uğur Şahin, MD and Özlem Türeci, MD from BioNTech. We also honored many of the SITC award winners and unveiled our inaugural class of the Fellows of the Academy of Immuno-Oncology.

The Fireside Chat for December is a discussion on the Best of SITC 2021. To provide a few different points of view on the highlights from the 36th Annual Meeting held last month, I was able to sit down with Ana Carrizosa Anderson, PhD – Harvard Medical School and Robert L. Ferris, MD, PhD – UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to get their perspective on the science that was delivered at the meeting.

During our chat, we discussed the session on COVID vaccines and how the findings can improve cancer vaccines. With an incredible 5,000 people attending SITC 2021, the discussion continued with reflections on the new hybrid nature of this year’s show. The Exhibit Hall is always a place for connecting with industry and colleagues; Dr. Ferris gave his thoughts on the abstracts showcased there as well as the many exhibitors. We also heard from Dr. Anderson on some of the exciting new initiatives that were discussed at the SITC Board of Directors meeting – the development of partnerships with engineers and efforts around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Our exchange left me excited for the coming year and especially for next year’s meeting. I want to thank both Dr. Anderson and Dr. Ferris for their feedback on the event and I look forward to seeing all of you at next year’s meeting in Boston. Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Patrick Hwu, MD

SITC President
