For decades, independent scientific peer review has ensured that federal research funding is awarded based on scientific merit, innovation, and potential patient benefit. This merit-based system has helped drive groundbreaking advances in cancer research and established the United States as a global leader in biomedical innovation.

SITC is concerned that the proposed rule could reduce the role of independent scientific peer review while increasing political review and discretionary decision-making in federal funding decisions. In its comments, SITC urged the Administration to preserve a funding process grounded in scientific excellence and evidence-based decision-making.

Now, Congress has an important oversight role in protecting the integrity of the nation's biomedical research enterprise. We encourage SITC members to contact their Members of Congress through the SITC Advocacy Toolkit and urge them to protect independent scientific peer review and the future of cancer research.
