A Message from the President
Dear Colleagues,
I can’t believe that six months have already elapsed since my very first fireside chat. Back in February, I spoke to BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin, MD, about the pandemic and the process to achieving a highly effective SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. While the world still grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccines have undeniably played a huge role in drastically decreasing the hospitalization and death rates caused by the virus, in locations where the vaccines are available and highly utilized.
Dr. Jaffee served as a keynote presenter during our society’s entirely virtual 35th Anniversary Annual Meeting last fall and she co-lead an AACR-SITC workshop on toxicities in March 2020 when news began to break of shutdowns in the country due to COVID. The work continued coming out of the workshop, despite the raging pandemic, which we talked about, among many other issues, for my latest SITC fireside chat. I’d like to share that the manuscript to come out of the toxicities workshop has been accepted for publication in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (JITC), so stay tuned in the coming weeks for a link to view this important work.
Dr. Jaffee has been a hugely important leader to our society, as both a rock star in pancreatic cancer research and in general as a leading woman in the field. I particularly enjoyed our conversation on mentorship in the field, and I hope viewers of all experience levels really valued her words of wisdom as we train the next generation in the SITC family to become leaders in their own right. Thanks to Dr. Jaffee once again for joining me this month! I look forward to seeing her, and the rest of you, at the 36th Annual Meeting & Pre-Conference Programs (SITC 2021) this November in Washington, D.C.
Sincerely,

Patrick Hwu, MD
SITC President
