MILWAUKEE – During the month of June, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) recognizes “Cancer Immunotherapy MonthTM” to highlight the advances and successes of immunotherapy to treat cancer patients.
The awareness month was started by the Cancer Research Institute in 2013, with a goal to raise awareness for cancer immunotherapy each June. SITC, a leading organization dedicated to improving cancer patient outcomes by advancing the science and application of cancer immunotherapy, honors the day to raise awareness of the innovative immunotherapy options available to treat cancer.
Throughout the month of June, SITC will highlight 30 ways the organization is shaping the future of cancer immunotherapy on the society’s social media platforms.
“As a professional society, it is SITC’s mission to improve cancer patient outcomes by advancing the development and application of cancer immunology and immunotherapy,” said SITC President Lisa H. Butterfield, PhD. “Through recognizing Cancer Immunotherapy Month™, SITC will raise awareness of immunotherapy for cancer and continue to move towards making ‘cure’ a reality for cancer patients everywhere.”
SITC also provides a variety of informative, free online resources to educate patients, clinicians, and researchers about cancer immunotherapy, including:
- For patients: Introduction to Cancer Immunotherapy and the Immune System: Developed specifically for newly diagnosed and restaged cancer patients and their caregivers, this online activity, originally published in the Patient Resource Guide: Understanding Cancer Immunotherapy (Fourth Edition), outlines the basics about how the immune system works to fight cancer, the types of cancer immunotherapy treatment and clinical trials as a treatment option for cancer patients.
- For clinicians: Basic Principles of Cancer Immunotherapy: This class, developed specifically for clinicians, covers approaches to cancer immunotherapy and tumor suppression of the immune system, patient selection for approved therapies, and dosing and sequencing of approved therapies. This class also includes case studies on basic principles of cancer immunotherapy.
- For researchers: Primer on Tumor Immunology and Cancer ImmunotherapyTM: Shared with an audience of researchers, these presentations from the society’s 32nd Annual Meeting (SITC 2017) are designed to provide a foundation for understanding core immunology principles as they relate to basic and clinical research in immunotherapy of cancer.
