Immune Monitor - September 2022

A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

With school back in session, I can’t help but think of our student and scientist-in-training members who are working hard to attain their scientific and medical degrees, as well as the early career scientists in our society who are diving into the world of cancer immunotherapy. SITC takes pride in creating a welcoming space for students and early career folks, and dedicates thoughtful energy and planning into creating robust events and programming for these individuals.

Lately our attention has been turned toward SITC 2022 – be sure to check out the host of Early Career events taking place in Boston. We are incredibly excited about the Speed Mentoring Event happening on Wednesday, Nov. 9, thanks to our Early Career Scientist (ECS) Committee. Following the Annual Meeting, we are looking forward to the fifth annual Cancer Immunotherapy Winter School, offered in hybrid format, Jan. 17-21, 2023. This opportunity is ideal for early-mid career scientists and clinicians who seek a deeper understanding of integral facets of the field of cancer immunotherapy. All of these opportunities are made possible through SITC’s Forward Fund. You can help us grow the future leaders in immuno-oncology by clicking here to make a donation.

My Fireside Chat guest is known for her work with early career scientists – she has trained 25 PhD and MD/PhD students and over 60 postdoctoral fellows, plus received mentor of the year twice at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Olivera Finn joins me this month – I hope you enjoy our conversation, where, in addition to mentorship, we touch on cancer vaccines and the clinical trial world.

It was wonderful chatting with Dr. Finn and I look forward to seeing her in Boston at the Meet-the-Expert Lunch where she will be hosting a table on, wouldn’t you know, mentorship!

The program will feature in-depth discussions of scientific breakthroughs, cutting-edge  methodologies and technologies, and the newest clinical studies pertaining to environmental, genetic, and patient-specific factors that affect patient health and response to immunotherapy.
